Jacopo dal PONTE, known as Jacopo BASSANO (workshop)
(Bassano, 1510 - 1592)
Signed and dated: 'Sebastianus (Dubois) fecit 1605'

Adoration of shepherds oil on canvas

Dimensions (cm): Canvas 88 x 123
with antique frame 114 x 149

The magnificent work in question is due to the movement of the Venetian painting of the master Jacopo dal Ponte, called Bassano (Bassano 1510-1592), founder of a type of painting sensitive to rural issues, often dramatically arranged around biblical themes.

Jacopo's work soon had a broad consensus, so that biblical pastoral inspirational representations became a great demand from the bourgeois clientele: his studio was then used to make many variations. Jacopo then entered his shop a real "image industry" to meet the growing demand for work: four of his sons Francis (1549-1592), Giambattista (1553-1613), Leandro (1557-1622) and Jerome (1566-1621), as well as a host of collaborators devoted themselves to the production of large quantities of subjects, including serial publications.

Our canvas, signed and dated exceptionally, inspired by the Adoration of the Shepherds, that Jacopo executed in 1568, now housed in the Galleria Corsini collection in Rome. The author of our canvas is a little biographical news, which should not be surprised by the painters of the shop Bassanes, not belonging to the direct dynasty; with many chances descended from the French Protestant painter François Dubois (Amiens, 1529 -Losanna, 1584).

As for the composition, a modest Madonna lays the sheet on the child, while St. Joseph helps behind her. It is worth mentioning the rendering of the shepherds on the opposite side, curious, moved and amazed, in an attitude of adoration for Jesus; as often happens in the works of the Bassano workshop, considered as a rich Venetian bourgeoisie, the shepherds are portrayed in an ironic version, the vision of the rural population was typical of this period, portrayed with a playful taste.

One of them greets the hat without much grace, the other pushes the ox against the child; another is still turning his back on sacred contemplation, ignoring the exceptional event unfolding behind him, his face illuminated by a burning hue.

Strong symbology for Christian art, the horns resting on a twig, the ends of which falls red blood, allusive to the passion of Christ.

A great effect is the role of light, the fulcrum of the composition, all played on sharp contrasts. Attention is drawn to the role of light on color, which, resting on dense surfaces, emphasizes painting and creates liveliness and novelty relationships with remarkable performance

STATE: The work is distinguished by its quality and conservation status. The canvas is in excellent condition. Accompanied by a golden frame of the early nineteenth century.

The painting is sold with a certificate of authenticity and iconographic description. We take care of the organization in a professional and safe transport. For more information www.antichitacastelbarco.it/spedizioni.html
