Jaques & Son of London. Of particular interest to the serious Chess Collector, and almost certainly a "one-off" special order, this stunning set firstly comes with its own fitted brass-bound oak case, with recessed military style brass carrying handle; original Bramah lock and key, and engraved cartouche: "Dr. Welch". Nestling inside the velvet-lined interior, the folding chess board is constructed of solid beautifully-figured rosewood, the board of rosewood and boxwood, whilst the pieces are of white and red-stained IVORY. The sprung action, patented by Jaques, is crisp and works perfectly ~ indeed the condition can be truly described as 'pristine'. There are locking slides in brass to both sides, and it is signed on an engraved brass plaque: "Jaques & Son Makers, LONDON". A wonderful chess set!

c.1860

Antiques travel chess set complete with carrying box. The box features brass corner brackets for increased strength and a flush fitting carry handle. The name plate on the top reads: Dr Welch
The interior of the box is lined with red velvet to help protect folding chess board inside.

The chess board unfolds and can be latched open to make for a sturdy playing surface.

The board features red stained and natural bone pieces with brass pins underneath to allow them to be pinned in place when putting the box away. This stops the pieces from sustaining damage in transit and means games can be continued at a later date.

The two pins on the outer edge of the chess board can be pressed to lock the pieces in place. To remove the pieces the large single pin on the inside edge of the board must be pressed.
