A good set of of four engravings of carved details from English cathedrals. These were commissioned by the Society of Antiquaries of London. They are engraved by James Basire from drawings by John Carter and relate to St Albans, Durham, Exeter, and Gloucester Cathedrals.

James Basire (1730-1802) was a member of The Society of Antiquaries of London and specialised in architectural engraving. Works by Basire hang in museums and galleries throughout the world, including the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the National Portrait Gallery, London

In 1772, William Blake was apprenticed to Basire for the term of seven years. For a time Blake considered Basire a rival and a threat to his own remarkable career.
