A fine and rare late George III period wall regulator, the beautifully patinated mahogany veneered case with swan neck top hood, exceptionally elegant tear-drop shaped trunk and paterae inlays.

The 11 ½ inch round silvered dial is of the conventional regulator type with separate dials for hours, minutes and seconds and is signed by the maker across the centre.

The sturdy 8-Day movement which has shaped plates has four heavy knopped pillars, deadbeat escapement, Harrison’s maintaining power and a large brass bob pendulum. All the wheels have high count pinions and six spoke crossings as does the large pulley for the weight. The pendulum hangs from a massive brass back cock and the movement is driven by a small brass cased weight.

Height: 6ft 1 in (185 cm)

* James Burton is listed on page 123 of Brian Loomes’ Clockmaker of the World: 21st century edition as working in Whitehaven, Cumbria from circa 1793 until his death in 1815.

Wall Regulators which are in cases of this exceptional quality and originality were made in very small numbers and are exceedingly hard to find today.
