James Sturgeon was primarily a painter of landscape and coastal studies in oil and watercolour. He was born in Scotland in 1932 and was essentially self-taught as an artist. He was encouraged to take up painting by the Royal Scottish Academician John Maxwell (1905-1962), who had returned to his home town of Dalbeattie in 1940. However, Sturgeon's primary influence was Donald Bain (born 1904), who had been instrumental in forming the New Scottish Group of Artists, which included progressive artists such as John Duncan Fergusson, Jankel Adler and Josef Herman. Fergusson, best known as one of the Scottish Colourists, also encouraged Sturgeon and invited him to exhibit at the Celtic School of Ballet, the dance school owned and run by Fergusson's wife Meg Morris. Sturgeon's exposure to these artists became a lasting influence on his own style, which led to him being referred to as "Galloway's Colourist". Not content with these influences, he spent a year in Canada studying the work of the "Group of Seven" and Tom Thomson. In the 1970s he opened his own gallery to show his work and that of other artists. He died in 2006, following a stroke in 2004.

This painting is an oil on panel and overall, including frame, measures 19(h) by 22(w) inches. It is housed in it's original frame, though the outer rim has been decorated to better suit the painting. The title of the painting is inscribed on the reverse and there is also a stamp for his Woodside Gallery, Dalbeattie. It is a bold, colourful and semi-abstracted work.
