A portrait miniature of a young lady with dark curling hair. She is wearing a white muslin dress with a "V" neckline and a diaphanous "buffon".

Oil on ivory in an oval gold frame, the reverse with plaited hair.

James Leakey, 1775-1865 was born in Exeter. He exhibited at the Royal Academy 1821-1846. He worked in London and Exeter and painted oil portraits and landscapes as well as miniatures. His miniatures are unusual as he painted them in oil and not the more usual watercolour. There are examples of his miniatures in the Victoria & Albert Museum and the National Portrait Gallery.
