A pretty portrait miniature of a young lady with long dark hair and wearing a pale pink dress and a white lace cap. Her brown hair is worn "a la conseilleur" and falling to her shoulders.

Watercolour on ivory in a simple rose gold oval frame.

James Scouler worked in London, flourished 1755-87. He was the first miniaturist to exhibit at the Royal Academy and contributed 32 examples up to the year 1787. Three portraits by him were shown at the British Empire Exhibition 1924.
