LEMUEL FRANCIS ABBOTT
c.1760 -1802 Labels verso
Oil on canvas 30 x 25 inches

Abbott was born in Leicestershire circa 1760 and was the son of a clergyman.
He went on to become a portrait painter and briefly studied with Hayman and then completed his studies at home.
He moved to London and was settled there by 1784 and by 1787 was married.
Abbott exhibited his portraits at the Royal Academy from 1788 to 1789. He was in a good practice especially with naval officers and government officials and could achieve a crisp likeness of the sitter and very characteristic. His full-length figures stand rather insecurely sometimes.
Ben Marshall was apprenticed to him for three years from 1791.
By July 1798 he was certified as insane and never recovered but portraits by him were exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1799 and 1800.
Abbott painted many notable figures including Lord Nelson, Admiral Hood, William Cowper, Matthew Boulton and many others.
Abbott’s paintings are often attributed to more famous artists which is a tribute to how good he was in a sadly short career.
Abbott died in London on 5 December 1802.
Bibl: Dictionary of British 18th Century Painters - Ellis Waterhouse
Works Represented: Victoria Art Gallery, Bath; Birmingham City Art Gallery; Claydon House N.T Buckinghamshire; NPG Edinburgh; National Maritime Museum Greenwich; NPG London; Tate Britain; Sheffield City Art Gallery amongst others.
