Very fine quality early 19th Century mahogany Stick Barometer, in essentially original condition, with ‘'swan-neck' pediment over engraved silvered brass register plate, bearing rack-and-pinion operated vernier and protected by glazed door with reeded edges. The plate is signed in an attractive curved banner. The case is of ‘flame’ mahogany, edge moulded, ebony banded and inset with long mercury Fahrenheit thermometer; the original concealed barometer tube terminating behind turned cistern cover, also of ‘flame’ mahogany.

The firm of Watkins was, for many years, foremost in the manufacture of Scientific Instruments. Specialising mainly in optical and meteorological instruments and working from premises at 5 Charing Cross from 1747, the firm continued to prosper under successive family proprietors until 1857 when it was acquired by Elliott Brothers…..and thence to GEC…….and Marconi………
