Very unusual and attractive early 19th Century Marine Stick Barometer; the case, of figured Cuban mahogany, banded in ebony. The arched top over engraved silvered brass register plates bearing standard weather notations, with manually adjusted vernier, and protected by glazed door. The well-patinated trunk inset with bow-fronted mercury Fahrenheit thermometer and terminating in rare 3-section ebonised boxwood cistern. The barometer is supported on replaced gimbals, set, unusually, into adjustable mount.

Watkins inherited the business of his illustrious uncle, Francis Watkins in 1785, initially in partnership with his brother, Walter, based in premises at 5 Charing Cross. He secured the Royal warrants of the Dukes of York and Clarence, together with the East India Company. He died in 1810.
