Works Hayllar painted between 1880 and 1900 are largely domestic scenes of everyday life at her father’s house, Castle Priory in Wallingford Berkshire. Both her figures and interiors are observed with great naturalness and charm; her models were mostly members of the family - she had three sisters: Edith, Mary and Kate, who all became painters. She also painted local characters from the village.
In 1899 she is recorded as living at Red Holme, Cambridge Road, Bournemouth.
In about 1900 she was crippled by an accident and thereafter painted only flower pictures and especially azaleas.
Jessica Hayllar died in 1940.
