Item Provenance & History

*Interestingly the date 1745 on the dial refers to the battle of Prestonpans – the first significant conflict in the second Jacobite Rising. The Jacobite army loyal to James Francis Edward Stuart and led by his son Charles Edward Stuart defeated the army loyal to the Hanoverian George II led by Sir John Cope. It was initially known as the Battle of Gladsmuir - but was fought at Prestonpans, East Lothian, Scotland. The victory provided the Jacobites with an enormous morale boost, and a heavily mythologized version of events has been depicted and commemorated in art since.

Item Description / Dealer Expertise

A fine George III period Scottish 8-Day mahogany painted dial longcase clock by J Lawder. The arched painted dial features floral motifs as well as the date 1745 which is a reference to the battle of Prestonpans. The dial has Roman hours and Arabic five minute numerals and a subsidiary seconds dial and the elegant brass hands appear to be original. The hood is surmounted by a swan neck pediment, gilt brass floral rosettes, inset boxwood frets, reeded freestanding columns, and a single brass finial. The elegant mahogany case is of excellent colour and patination, with fine ‘flame’ figuring. The case has reeded quarter columns, an arched top door panel and a single plinth. The 8-day two train movement has hour strike on a single bell.
