Joan Souter-Robertson was born in India in 1903. She studied art in Paris under Andre Lhote at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere. She then set up a studio in London and became known paricularly for her paintings of children, flowers and as a decorator of furniture. She held her first solo show at the Storran Gallery in 1936 and in the same year married a French biologist. This caused her to live abroad for some years during which time she held several exhibitions of her work in the Middle East and Africa. In Britain she exibited at the Royal Academy, New English Art Club, Redfern Gallery and the London Group. A retrospective exhibition of her work was held at the Addison-Ross Gallery in 1993.

This painting is a watercolour framed behind glass and a double wash-lined conservation mount and with a gold rim. The young girl depicted in the painting appears in other works by the artist and may have been a relative. If a purchaser requires posting then for safety reasons the glass would need to be removed before posting.
