A fine George II period figured arched dial walnut longcase clock of 8-day duration with hour strike and strike/silent.

The slim elegant case is veneered with highly figured walnut of excellent colour and patination. The pull-forward arched top hood is flanked by turned pillars with brass capitals and bases and has a carved walnut sound fret in the arch.

The 12 inch arched brass dial has an applied chapter ring with urn and foliate finials. The centre is finely matted with an applied seconds ring and an aperture to view the day of the month. The maker’s signature – John Brodu, London - is engraved on a raised silvered disc above the date. Within the arch there is a subsidiary strike/silent dial flanked on each side by a dolphin spandrel.

The five pillared 8-day plated movement has rack strike on the hour sounded on a bell and passing strike at half past the hour.

It is complete with brass bob pendulum and a pair of brass capped weights.

Height: 89 in (226 cm)

*John Brodu is listed on page 105 of Brian Loomes’s ‘Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World: Complete 21st Century Edition’ as working in London, circa 1730.
