Impressive mahogany and brass cased “Portable Barometer”; the loop suspension over cylindrical case, the engraved silvered brass barometer register plate recording readings from 18-33 inches, with manually operated vernier, protected by rotating brass ‘shield’. Correction factors located on cylindrical ivory collar. The concealed restricted bore barometer tube terminates in classic Newman two-section iron cistern which also houses the bulb of the mercury Fahrenheit ivory thermometer, all concealed within two part brass cover,

Newman was perhaps the greatest scientific instrument maker of the 19th Century. He made this style of portable – with modifications - barometer as ‘Mountain’, Balloonists’, Miners’ Barometers. This instrument would operate at heights up to 13,000 feet.
