A fine late 17th century ebony and gilt mounted hour striking bracket clock by John Gordin whose work bears many similarities to that of Daniel Quare.

The 7 inch square dial is mounted with a silvered chapter ring and winged cherub spandrels to the four corners. The dial centre is matted with a chamfered date aperture and it has finely pierced blued steel hands. There is a strike/silent lever above XII and the maker’s signature John Gordin, London is set within the mock pendulum aperture.

The verge movement runs for 8-days and strikes the hours on a bell. There is also pull repeat-work for sounding the hours and quarters on 5 bells. The backplate bears the maker’s signature and is exquisitely engraved with scrolling foliage, birds and a stylised human head. The heart-shaped backcock is elaborately cast.

The oak case which is veneered with ebony, stands only 13 inches high and is in the classic style of table clocks by Daniel Quare. Standing on four brass bun feet and with a dome top, the case is surmounted by a knopped and scroll carrying handle also in the manner of Daniel Quare and finely cast gilt mounts. To the side of the case there are glazed windows above which are two finely carved ebony frets.

Height: 13 ¼ in (33.5 cm)

*John Gordin is recorded on page 220 of Brian Loomes’ Clockmakers of Britain 1286-1700’ as working in London after 1698 when he was made free of the Clockmakers’ Company. He was based at the Black Spread Eagle in Ludgate Street, and from the high quality and style of the movement and cases, he had close links with Daniel Quare.
