A fine George III period 3-pad top ebonised pearwood table clock of rare small size. The silvered engraved 6 inch brass dial is signed by the maker and has Roman hour and Arabic minutes with strike/silent in the arch. The backplate is beautifully engraved with flowers and foliage as are the fixing brackets. In the centre there is an oriental pavilion which is repeated in miniature on the backcock apron.

The 8-day movement sounds the hours on a single bell and has a knife edge verge escapement with pear-shaped pendulum bob.

The elegant ebonised case has a three pad top with a brass carrying handle, brass mouldings to the door and moulded ebonised feet.

Height: 13 ¼ in (33.5 cm)

Width: 9 ¼ in (23.5 cm)

Depth: 6 ¼ in (16 cm)

* John Ireland is listed on page 410 of Brian Loomes’s Clockmakers of the World: 21st Century Edition. He was working in Maiden Lane between 1772 and 1780.

Bracket clocks of such small proportions are increasingly rare and are therefore very sought after by collectors.
