This excellent pair of pictures are by one of England’s most famous hunting and sporting painters. A London artist, he studied at the slade school of art and academic Julian, he exhibited in London at the Royal academy from 1895-1904. He was elected to the royal institute in 1903. The paintings depict a part of English Foxhounds hunting in what is more than likely Leicestershire. One shows the huntsman, whips, hounds and followers in full cry. The action of the horses and hounds is exceptional in its execution. Being a hunting person myself, one has seen many a chase, but to be able to capture it in a painting is really talented to very few extremely gifted artists.
The other painting shows the hunt "going home" at the end of the day, again the quality of movement captured is superb. It is a pleasure to see that all the tack is depicted as it should be with great attention to detail. Both paintings are signed one in the bottom left hand corner and the other in the bottom right. They are both in good condition, professionally framed (most probably the original frames) with a fine wash line mount. Having been in my possession for over fifty years, they are now ready for sale.
