English, West Country Oak joined folding table, circa 1620, of good proportions and colour. It has substantial turned gun barrel legs which have a compartment above them with the top leaf hinged to it. The frieze is highly decorated with strapwork ornamented with ovoid and pyramidal studs, and is typical of the work from Exeter at this period. The drop leaf is hung at the back and is supported by a gate when in use. There is a closely related example in Chinnery’s “Oak Furniture, The British Tradition”, Figure 3:203, Page 302. There have been some restorations with both leafs tipped and also small fillets in each one.
