Rare and very good quality, late 18th Century inlaid mahogany Wheel Barometer; the elegantly proportioned and well patinated case with arched top, chequer-strung, with cross-grained sides, and inlaid with round and oval fan and star marquetry paterae. The barometer is inset with well engraved silvered brass Fahrenheit thermometer and 8 inch diameter main barometer dial, signed by the maker, and protected by glass cover with rare turned wooden bezel, also chequer strung.

One of the foremost engravers of barometers, Somalvico settled in Holborn around 1780 having emigrated from his native Italy. This address, 90 Holborn, significantly, has not previously been recorded. It clearly is one of his earliest premises. His business thrived for over 120 years thereafter.
