In the 18th century Japanese porcelain had a major influence on the first European porcelain factories. Chantilly was one of the very first French porcelain factories. The factory made soft-paste porcelain in the Kakiemon style from 1725-1751. It distinguished its wares from other porcelains with an underglaze blue hunting horn mark.
In the second half of the 19th century, circa 1870-1880, Edme Samson used the Chantilly designs to make beautiful porcelain wares which were marked with both the hunting horn and Samson's intertwined "S"s.
