According to W.R. Sargent such covered beakers were probably exported to Europe to be used for drinking chocolate. Such shapes were recovered from the Vung Tau wreck which has been dated to c. 1690. For further details see William R. Sargent, 'Treasures of Chinese Export Ceramics from the Peabody Essex Museum' (2012), pp. 128-129.
