The box is brass bound with triple rows of brass stringing to the top and front. The lid opens to a leather and velvet lined interior with mirror and billet doux compartments within the lid and various silver gilt fittings and equipage. The top tray is removable with storage below. The drawer beneath is fully fitted with velvet for jewellery. The silver gilt and glass fitting bear hallmarks for Thomas Whitehouse London 1871-1872 who is recorded as a boxmaker. The other items predate the box with the hallmark of London 1821-1822 and maker’s initials C.R. Note some glassware is damaged. The lock bears the name J.T. Needs 100 New Bond Street London, late branch of Piccadilly (with royal crown over).
