Surand was a French painter of animals. He also painted portraits, interiors, landscapes, marines, genre and religious subjects. He was also a pastellist, watercolourist and sculptor.
He was a pupil of Jean-Paul Laurens and travelled abroad from 1884. Surand exhibited works at the Paris Salon from 1881 and was made a member of the committee in 1906 after winning numerous prizes.
He was also made a Chevalier de la Legion d’honneur in 1910.
Surand was one of the first European artists to depict both African and Indian wildlife for its own splendour.
