L’AURORE (THE DAWN)
GODDESS OF THE DAWN
1822 -1912 Signed
Bronze 24 ½ inches high including base
Moreau was born on the Cote-d’Or in 1822, the son of Jean Baptiste Moreau who was also a sculptor.
He studied under his father and enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in 1841 where he was a pupil of Ramey and Dumont.
He exhibited at the Salon from 1848 onwards and received numerous awards including the Legion d’Honneur in 1885. Moreau received many public commissions and his statues and monuments are to be found in many parts of Paris.
His bronzes include numerous classical and allegorical figures and groups.
Works by the artist can be found in the Museums of Angers, Dijon and Paris (Museum of Modern Art).
