While a young man in his 20s, and already much in demand as a teacher, Varley would take his pupils on sketching trips beside the Thames. In the years 1816-23 he produced a number of watercolours of the old buildings, rutted tracks and dilapidated fences along both banks of the river, including the semi-rural districts of Putney, Battersea, Chelsea, and Millbank. The present view seems to be taken from a point near the site of the present-day National Theatre, looking south-west, with the towers of Westminster Abbey seen in to the left of the tree in the distance.
