This is a very nice lacquer chinoiserie longcase clock dating from the first half of the 18th century. The technique (also known as Japaning) became popular at the end of the 17th Century .
The 12 inch arched brass dial bears the name of the maker Edward Cooper who was working in London in the early 18th Century and is recorded as a member of the clock makers company in 1740. The 8 day duration 5 finned pillar weight driven movement is of very high quality and strikes the hours on a bell. It is in excellent working condition having been serviced quite recently serviced.
The lacquer work is very nice indeed with good detail particularly on the door. The condition of the case is excellent having been subject of an older sympathetic restoration. Interestingly the background which is now very dark , almost black in places shows a distinct green hue which suggests that this case was original green before the passage of time darkened it.
No doubt interested parties will be aware how delicate this kind of Chinoiserie is and many item have degraded to very poor condition indeed. This clock is very presentable and ready to go into the home. There are the inevitable age mark which can be seen from the images but nothing which will worry the customer .
The hood is surmounted by gilded wood finials and the sides are glazed to allow the mechanism to be seen.
This clock is only 7 ft 6 inches tall ,the trunk is only 14 inches wide and the widest point 20 3/4 inches wide and 10 1/4 inches deep.
