Item Provenance & History

Note: Born in 1774, George was in Partnership with Peter Dollond until he died in 1820. George then continued the business until he died himself in 1856. He exhibited at The Great Exhibition in 1851 and was Instrument Maker to William IV and Queen Victoria.

Item Description / Dealer Expertise

An excellent quality mahogany wheel barometer displaying some unusual features.

The very rare 13" silvered brass dial calibrated from 28" to 31" with usual weather indications but unusually displayed horizontally across the dial . Also with very finely made hands of an unusual design. The main dial surrounded with a substantial concave glazed brass bezel fixed from the back of the case. The removable thermometer box with bowed glass and with a silvered brass scale calibrated from 0º to 130º Fahrenheit and from 10º to 40º Reaumur. Also with a working hygrometer enclosed within a glazed cast brass bezel. The level with high quality engraving. The very well made mahogany case with ebony edge inlay and ebonised mouldings. The swan neck top with a central brass urn finial.
