An Unusually Large Central African Congo Ivory Oliphant
A ceremonial side blown trumpet, carved from the tusk of an elephant. With a brass sleeve

Size: 171cm high – 67ΒΌ ins high – 180cm high – 71 ins high (with base)
Provenance: Ex London Private collection
Gigantic tusks such as this were often used to announce the presence of the King to the royal court. The Oba of Benin had a special team of Royal trumpeters to announce his coming and going.
A watercolour painted before 1666 by the Italian renaissance collector Manfredo Settala of Milan shows two oliphants, a handwritten note accompanies it stating 'Elephant tooth arranged to play, used in the Kingdom of Congo to be played in front of the King.....'
