This beautiful clock set was designed by the leading French 19th-Century craftsman, Henry Dasson (1825-1896). While remembered primarily as a cabinetmaker, Dasson started his career as a sculptor, who mainly worked in bronze. His bronze sculptures are of an exceptionally high quality, as demonstrated by the putti figures in this clock set. The set is signed ‘Henry Dasson’ and the clock dated ‘1881’.

The clock set—which is comprised of a mantel clock and pair of candelabra—is designed in a beautiful Louis XVI style. The mantel clock features a gilt bronze (ormolu) cercle tournant dial, with black Roman Numerals and Arabic Numbers, and crowned by a gilt bronze sculpture of a rooster crushing an owl. This is possibly the Gallic Rooster, the symbol of the French Republic. The dial is inscribed with a map of the world, so that it imitates a globe. It is carried by four patinated bronze semi-nude putti, who represent the four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter. These putti stand on an oval gilt bronze base, which is decorated with pierced latticework, stylised foliate motifs and classical masks, and set on four feet.

Accompanying the mantel clock are a pair of candelabra. Each candelabrum features a pair of flower bunches, which bloom and develop into candle-holders. In each, the bunches are carried in the raised hands of a patinated bronze putto. These putti are depicted semi-nude, in relaxed contrapposto poses. They stand on shaped, oval gilt bronze bases, which are pierced and decorated with cartouches and foliage. Each base is set on four feet.
