Charles Branwhite was an English artist born in Bristol in 1817. He began his studies under his father, a Miniaturist painter, and was heavily influenced by William Muller the Classicist. Muller's style had enormous impact on his student Charles Branwhite. They became very close and Branwhite’s sister married Muller’s younger brother Edmund. During his lifetime Branwhite exhibited works at the Royal Academy, the British Institution, and the Society of British Artists. The Art Journal carried an article about him praising his Winter Scenes. Branwhite’s work is now in Museums throughout Britain including The Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

This signed and dated (1852) Oil on Canvas is a fine example of the work of this Victorian artist. The composition is Classical in style, and the colours are subdued but harmonious, a testament to the many hours spent 'en plein air' observing nature. The canvas is presented in a hand-made gilt frame.
