Charles Octave Lévy was born in Paris in 1820. He was a pupil of Armand Toussaint (1806-1862) and exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1873 to 1898, winning a prize in 1889. Works exhibited at the Salon include: in marble ‘Naïade’ (1889) and ‘Le Réveil’ (1896); in bronze, ‘Faneur’ and ‘Captif’ (1890). Levy was known for his strong modelling and superb detail. His subjects often included historical and romantic figures as well as portrait busts. However, it is for his figures in bronze of ‘Salomé’, ‘Venus et Cupidon’ and ‘Le Faneur’ that he is best known. |
