- In this delightful painting by Galien-Laloue, the viewer is transported to Boulevard de Bonne Nouvelle in Paris at dusk on a chilly Autumn day. A fashionable crowd is wandering around the brightly illuminated shops and stalls; leaves crunching under foot. In the centre of the composition, a flower girl is handing out a posy of flowers to a well-dressed couple whilst next to them a fashionable gentleman buys a newspaper.

- The area was, and still is, surrounded by colourful cafés and theatres, such as the Théâtre du Gymnase Marie Bell as seen on the top right hand side of this work. During the 18th and 19th Centuries, about 180 passages were created there to allow members of high society to continue their shopping despite the inclement weather. Galien-Laloue returned to this arrondissement time and time again over the course of his career and this work is the epitome of his paintings of Parisian street scenes, usually painted in winter or autumn.
