Joseph Louis Lamberton was born in the Drome region of France, the son of an engraver. He started his artistic training in St. Étienne at the École Régionale des Arts Industriels before moving to Paris to the École des Beaux Arts to study sculpture and painting. He subsequently studied at the Académie Julian with fellow pupils Jacques-Emile Blanche and Auguste Rodin.

Joseph Louis Lamberton returned to live in St. Étienne, and taught at various colleges in the city. He also practiced as a sculptor, decorating building facades in the Art Nouveau style, and being commissioned to execute many monuments, the largest being the Monument of Remembrance in the cemetery of Cret de Roc, St. Étienne. He was also commissioned to create many sculptures, the most notable of which is the Muse of Music in honour of Jules Massenet (1926), also in St. Étienne.

However, he continued with his painting, exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris from 1899 to 1907, as well as commissions for decorative paintings for various public buildings and churches. His recurring themes and subjects in his paintings included nudes, portraits, and still lifes.

Joseph Louis Lamberton died at St. Étienne in 1943.
