This painting depicts a scene from Greek mythology - the tale of Leda and the Swan. Leda was the wife of the King of Sparta, and was either raped or seduced by Zeus whilst he was in the guise of a swan. She subsequently gave birth to twins, who were born from eggs. This myth was often portrayed in art and literature - Michelangelo painted a version in tempera which is now lost, and W.B. Yeats' rather dark poem on the subject is a masterpiece. Arthur Moody's painting shows a tranquil, nude Leda unaware of the swan lurking ominously behind her.
