Works evolve in the process of making, of constructing and assembling, drawing, painting, on canvas, board or paper. I search for a visual language, which will communicate perceptions of place and time, from time to time juxtaposing fragments of found objects and documents with graphic media, thus introducing elements of reality into the work.
Influences on my painting are many. Visual artists such as Picasso, Braque and Nicholson, Brancusi and Hepworth, are clearly important to me, as is the experience of time spent in France and Germany. In the final analysis I would hope that the work simply reflects the experience of life.
From the artist
Selective Galleries in Cornwall, Bristol, Bath, London, Gloucestershire. As well as Italy, France and Amsterdam.
These letters to Mme Dubuisson in Quimper dated between 1897 & 1911 were found in a “brocante des antiquites” in Brittany. She was a deputy in the French parliament. This work is a requiem for that ordered world, so soon to be disrupted by WW1. Letters for Quimper also refers simply to Q,U,I,M,P,E,R – you’ll have to search hard to find “I” & “M”.

In search of lost time (series)
This theme relates to the fragments of documents dating from the first part of the 20th century in France, which are collaged into the works. The theme title refers to Marcel Proust’s seminal novel; but also relates to the disturbed bourgeois world described in Irene Nemirowsky’s novels of the 1930’s; a world recovering from the shocks of the First World War, unaware of what the future held for them.
