Mackintosh was appointed Captain Lieutenant of the 3rd Corps of Marines, 30th November, 1793; 1st Lieutenant of the 10th Crops of Marines, 15th August, 1805; and 1st Lieutenant of Royal Marines, 1 January 1816. In 1805 he sailed on the Polyphemus for the Battle of Trafalgar. The appointment was renewed at Brighton in January 1816/ He died in South Africa. His portrait by Cosway shows him as a young officer, probably painted shortly before he sailed for Trafalgar in 1805.
