Lifesize limewood sculpture of Saint John of Nepomuk with polychrome decoration. Bohemia, early 17th century.
St John of Nepomuk is a Bohemian saint who in the late 14th century was cast into the river Vltava and drowned for refusing to divulge the secrets of the confessional. He is considered the first martyr of the Seal of the Confessional and is also considered a protector from floods. A 17th century statue of St John of Nepomuk is on the King Charles bridge in Prague, the site of his martyrdom.
Lacking hands, legs and feet. An old iron stand is attached to the hollowed out back of the figure to provide stability. There is a new grey painted iron stand which raises the sculpture to lifesize height.
