This beautiful Limoges enamel plaque depicts a young woman seated within a study. The back of the painting is inscribed with the name, 'Madame Le Recamiere', the famous French socialite whose beauty was widely celebrated in the 18th Century. However, this appears to be a later misidentification of the woman depicted, since the image is clearly based on Maurice-Quentin Delatour’s well-known pastel portrait of Madame de Pompadour, of 1755.

The lady wears an elegant white floral dress, and she holds in her hands a large open book, or perhaps a musical score. In the background, an armchair, which is decorated with roses, matching the chair the woman sits on, serves as a prop for a mandolin. The impression created is that the lady is well educated and accomplished, as well as beautiful. The woman looks off into the distance in the viewer’s left, a faint smile playing on her face. Her cream-coloured heel flirtatiously pokes out from underneath her gown.

Short, well-blended brushstrokes have been employed by the artist to carefully render intricate details, such as the woman’s curled hair, or the lace frills of her dress.

The painting is set within a carved giltwood frame, which is decorated beading, twisted rope edges, and foliate forms.
