A good quality bronze of a crouching lioness on a naturalistic rocky base. The bronze is in good overall condition retaining its original patination.
Albert Charles Hager was a sculptor who specialised in animal bronzes particularly large species such as elephants, horses and lions. He was part of a group of Belgian artists who took animal sculpting to a new level in his native country. Like many of his fellow artists, he studied in Paris and later went on to teach art helping to expand sculpting in his country.
Hager honed his skill at producing finely observed and modelled sculptures of exotic species by visiting the Antwerp Zoo, which was established in 1843 and is one of the oldest animal parks in the world. Hager took part in a collective exhibition with Victor Abeloos (1881-1965) and Jean Laudy (1877-1956) at the Galerie Royale, Brussels on from December 1917 to January 1918.
An example of his work can be found at the Musée Charlier, Brussels.
