D. Y. Cameron, along with fellow Scots Muirhead Bone and James McBey, was at the forefront of the etching revival of 1880-1930. By the 1920s and 30s Cameron was a well-established painter in England as well as Scotland. His paintings in oil and watercolour received critical acclaim and entered many public collections in Britain and abroad. His muted palette underwent a change following a visit to the south of France in 1921 to convalesce after a heart attack. He continued to use the vivid colours of his French landscapes in later Scottish subjects.
