This opulent late-19th Century mantel clock—with its profusion of C-scrolls and stylised foliage, as well as classical masks and dynamic sculptural figures—is clearly inspired by the luxury arts of the Louis XV period (1715-1174) in France.

The mantel clock is crowned by a pair of patinated bronze sculptures of a cherub and young female figure. The woman (possibly the Roman goddess Flora) holds a gilt bronze (ormolu) bunch of flowers above her head, as though she is about to scatter them. The cherub affectionately gazes up at the woman and pours water from a gilt bronze urn.

These figures perch on a gilt bronze pyramidal clock case which is topped by a globe. The globe is covered with flowers and features a belt decorated with the signs of the Zodiac. At the centre of the clock case, there is a circular white enamel dial. This dial is inscribed with navy Roman Numerals and black Arabic Numerals, as well as the retailer's name, ‘Darlay et Latreille, Bordeaux’. The dial is set behind a glass lens which is encircled by beading.

The gilt bronze case is heavily ornamented with leafy, fruiting grape vines and scrollwork. Its shoulders are topped by putti head masks and a third classical mask decorates its lower body. The clock is raised off the ground by large leafy C-scroll feet. Its reverse is signed by the manufacturer, Etabt / Bazelaire / De Paris'.
