Louis XVI gilt barometer signed Noel, opticien salle. (As in England many opticians were scientific instrument makers with skills in blowing and grinding glass.) Selon Toricelli. Evangelista Toricelli was a follower of Gallileo and succeeded him to the post of grand-ducal mathematician and professor of mathematics at the university of Pisa. “Selon”, or, “after” Torricelli is an acknowledgement to the use of the mercury tube and vacuum which he discovered whilst experimenting on the properties of air, previously thought be weightless.
Restored and in full working order, fitted with a new mercury filled glass tube.
