William Belford was appointed Ensign in the 13th Foot in 1780 and Lieutenant in 1783. He served eight years in the West Indies, was at the capture of St. Eustatia, and in the action when Gen. Prescott attempted the relief of Brimstone Hill. In 1794 he obtained a company in the 13th foot and volunteered at the request of General Johnson and served with him in the Irish rebellion of 1798. He served the campaign in Egypt and in the landing which previously took place at Ferrol, and afterwards at Gibraltar. In 1805 he had the brevet of Major and 1812 the brevet of Lieut. Col.Fine
