A profile portrait of a gentleman, he is wearing a brown jacket, white lace cravat and his powdered wig is known as a 'Catogan' or 'Club" wig. This type of wig has the back hair or queue doubled up to form a thick coil of hair with the ribbon bound around the middle.
Cut out profile and coloured with pastel crayon and laid on card in original oval turned wood frame with gilded beading.
LUCAS BATEMAN 1752-1790
Bateman was an amateur artist, impresario and wine merchant. He exhibited a crayon and two other portraits at the Society of Artists in 1775. He cut the profiles to produce a sharp outline and coloured the detail in pastel crayons. His work is rare, he worked in London, Shrewsbury and Edinburgh.
