Charles Bale was almost exclusively a painter of exquisite still-life paintings of fruit and flowers, painted in a style derived from George Lance and William Duffield.

He lived and worked in London and exhibited twenty-four times between 1868 and 1875, including at, The Royal Academy and The Dudley Gallery and at the Royal Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street of which he was also a member.

This fine example of his work, by repute, was exhibited at The Royal Academy in 1872.
