Magna Graecian Epichysis with Reclining Female

Southern Italy, 4th Century BC

Mid-to-dark tan clay with black gloss over whole, red wash in parts and applied red, black, yellow and white decoration. Reel shaped body with applied motif of laurel encircling; Domed shoulder with draped female reclining right; holding basket in right hand and mirror in left; fillet in hair; flanked on both sides by elaborate palmette complex; applied tongues to lower half of handle; Crudely modeled head terminal at point of separation between spout and handle.
