Magnificent companion pair of life size full-length portraits with Spencer Churchill interest
- by Enoch Seeman. 1728 and 1730.

William, Viscount Bateman painted 1730 and Ann, Viscountess Bateman painted 1728.
William Bateman, 1st Viscount Bateman KB, FRS (1695 – December 1744), was a British Whig politician, the son of Sir James Bateman, of Shobdon Court, Shobdon, Herefordshire, Lord Mayor of London and his wife Esther Searle, daughter of John Searle of Finchley, Middlesex.
He was returned to Parliament for Leominster in 1721. In 1725, he was raised to the Peerage of Ireland as Baron of Culmore, in the County of Londonderry, and Viscount Bateman. He once again represented Leominster in parliament between 1727 and 1734. He was made a Knight Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1732 and elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1733.
Lord Bateman married Lady Anne Spencer, daughter of Charles Spencer, 3rd Earl of Sutherland and Lady Anne Churchill, daughter of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, in 1720.
Lady Anne Spencer was born in 1702. She died on 19 February 1769 at Cleveland Row, London, England.

Kneller was commissioned for Spencer-Churchill family portraiture until his death in 1723. This is evidenced by the 1715 portrait of Anne’s younger sister, Lady Diana Spencer with her mother Lady Anne, Countess of Sutherland .

After that time, they turned to Enoch Seeman to assume the role. Enoch Seeman the Younger was born in Danzig, now Gdansk, in Poland in 1694. His father, Enoch the Elder, of Flemish origin, was also a painter and took him to London in 1704 where they resided in St Martin’s Lane. Seeman’s style was heavily influenced by that of Godfrey Kneller. From 1717 he received Royal patronage as court painter and in 1730 he completed a full-length portrait of George I in his coronation robes (Middle Temple, London) and also George II (Windsor Castle Royal Collection). Other examples of his work include a portrait of Sir Isaac Newton and interestingly a dual portrait of the Anne’s grandfather, John Churchill the 1st Duke of Marlborough with the military engineer John Armstrong, now at Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire. More of his work can be seen at the National Portrait Gallery in London, Yale University Art Gallery and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
