An excellent quality mahogany Victorian style Country House Pillar Post Box. The hexagonal domed roof carved with adjoining half moons above each edge and with central dome, the posting slot with a brass shutter incised 'LETTERS', the locking door with original key and brass framed label showing postage fees, above a drawer with a brass drop handle.

The first pillar box was introduced to the British Isles in 1852. This model of the street pillar box was designed by John Batson in 1872 and was widely reproduced in miniature to be used in large country houses and hotels. A servant or postman would empty the box and take the letters to the post office.

English, 20th century.
