Jonathan Pratt was a Birmingham painter who was known for his genre works and interior scenes. He studied at the Birmingham School of Art and started exhibiting in Birmingham from 1864. He is listed as a figure. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1871- 1903 with titles including ‘Where’s Grandpa?’, ‘A Devonshire Cottage’, and ‘A Breton Cottage’. Pratt also exhibited at Suffolk Street, Royal Institute of British Artists, Glasgow Institute of Fine Art and other major galleries during his lifetime. In 1872, he was made a Member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. His works show extensive use and knowledge of his palette, working large areas of light and shade with subtle mid tones. His figures are natural in poise giving them character and life. His son Claude Pratt (1860-1935) also found success as an artist.
